I went to OU for my undergrad and I got my masters in 2017 so I’ve lived here since 2005, so I’ve lived here quite, quite a while now. Not that I, you know, went out a lot because I had lot of stuff to do, but you know, I’d make time here and there to go out with my friends and meet people and I dated, you know, medical students, which at the time I thought was where it would be easiest because they kind of understand my schedule and they understand what it’s like. Like his sleep patterns are off. Kade: 18:10 Yeah, it was. They’re in residency at a program that’s a 5hr drive away, it can work if you put in the effort. Kade: 07:15 Just the whole way, which is kind of nice. And I really just tried to accommodate her because I thought, well that, that’s what makes sense because she’s a doctor, she’s super busy and I’m not, I’m a research administrator. Kade: 12:32 She can still talk about that. So you know, every now and then she needed an errand done, you know, I’d try to do it for in the city if I could. You have to go through a lot of, not so great dates, but I eventually met him. Lara: 31:23 Great. I remember when we were in surgery residency and the kids hadn’t seen Josh in quite some time and I was frustrated and I talked to him about it and he said, you know, you’re right, you’re right. Lara: 25:52 So any advice you guys would have for medical students or someone dating a medical student? So definitely just make time for that. Because we know that being married to a doctor isn’t always as glamorous as it sounds, our podcast helps successful homes be happier. But I would just say as you mature, you have to look at the other person and you have to be considerate of them and everything that they have going on. Kade: 31:26 Any last words? Okay. Yeah. How can you date somebody outside of medicine? Yeah. Depending on when you get together, like you might be trying to do a couples match or something like that and not maybe committing…. Um, so when Jen was still living in Oklahoma, we actually went to look at some apartments and things when we knew that she was going to Vanderbilt. Right? They're still doing well and he manages to spend a lot of time with her and still do things like resident poker night, go to basketball and hockey games, and hanging out with attendings, etc. Kade, what about you? I mean, to be frank about it, I mean I, I had, I’ll never forget, I was at a party one time and I met a guy and we were having this great conversation. It’s because that’s who we’re around all the time. And I thought that that was kind of where I would end up. Have you guys seen each other at all during the seven months? It's the same as any other hobby or activity during residency, if you make it a priority you'll find the time to make it happen. It’s constant work, really. So rare is the meeting/dating/marrying during residency formula that when Surgeon made his graduation speech, the loudest applause was when he mentioned meeting/dating/marrying yours truly. Go on. And that’ll always keep lines of communication open and keep you from growing apart. And then one time I waited too late to buy a plane ticket and they were like, you know, 500 bucks a round trip ticket. However, it can also be incredibly rewarding if your relationship can come out on the other side. Or are you driving? While it might be tempting to put off dating during training, Jen and Kade share their … You don’t have to try to marry the first person that, you date, you know, I, I feel like that might be something, especially when you’re younger, you think, oh that might happen. And so, you know, trying to help them through that with a little bit of coaching. I’m a singer, so that’s kind of what led me into the world of laryngology. Met my girlfriend during my intern year through a dating app. I would definitely say, yeah. He isn't in medicine. I think that, you know, we should just try to make time for that throughout training because it’s, I don’t know, I think it’s important and it keeps you happy. Lara: 18:05 Well good. I can’t remember for sure. So, oh, the other thing I was going to say is dating people outside of medicine, then on the other hand was also presented unique challenges because a lot of guys are not, they, they get intimidated. So yeah, so it’s kind of, you know, it’s like the last thing I do before I go to bed and it kind of just makes it feel like we’re not so far apart because I kind of tell him how my day was and he tells me how his day was.
